Settlements in car accidents?

I keep hearing that you can only get up to the max amount of the person's policy amount when you are injured in a car accident unless you file on your uninsured motor in your own policy.

My question is what if you are hit by a 18 wheeler? Are these case settled the same way or are they harder to get a settlement?

The injuries are bulging disc in neck shown on MRI with spinal cord compression, with migraines, pain down left arm, treatment was about 4 months with family pcp, neurosurgeon, physical therapy. total medical was about $20000.00.
