    Verizon services VS Sprint services?

so I know verizon and sprint both use CDMA for the majority of their services, but is there really a difference in where I will get services? they both say roaming is free with their plans so this is what im confused about. the Verizon map shows great coverage, and I can attest to it, but the sprint map is no where near the size of verizon? why is this?if they both use the same towers would it be safe to assume that anywhere I got verizon coverage I should have sprint coverage? any help is greatly appreciated

also If sprint doesnt have this coverage that Verizon has then where does the FCC fall into place, I had always assumed the operators leased the network from the Govt....so just trying to clean up some of my miss perceptions THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP
