    merger information
As you may have heard, some Alltel Wireless properties will merge with Verizon Wireless in 2009. As part of the purchase agreement and to preserve competition in certain markets, Verizon is required to transition some properties to another service provider. Verizon and Atlantic Tele-Network (ATN) have signed a definitive agreement for ATN to purchase some of these cellular market areas. The states represented are: Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina.

ATN is a telecommunications company that provides roaming services for U.S. and international wireless carriers in rural U.S. areas. ATN also provides wireless service in Bermuda, Guyana and Turks & Caicos.

The goal of ATN is to further develop these former Alltel markets and provide customers the attention and flexibility of a local provider. Also, as part of the agreement with Verizon Wireless, nationwide coverage will still be available.

(States not included are: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming)

No action is required on your part at this time. Your service will continue

Because when I think of institutional oppression, discrimination, and the lack of equal opportunities in terms of starting and keeping businesses, I automatically think of white guys, too.

Sort of an update... Joseph Stroud (he owns Telephone USA Investments, Inc.) is trying to complain that he should have had a shot at getting the contract instead of AT&T.
Once his complaints are filtered thorough the system then there 'should' be some movement.
To shed some light on Stroud, he gave Roland Burris $1.2 million for a campaign contribution that "magically disappeared". And for those of you who don't remember Burris, he was the newly elected US Senator for Illinois that then (he got impeached by his state Senate) Governor Rod Blagojevich appointed.
Ah, isn't politics such a sweet refreshing way to start your day.

Yes that makes sense. I'm hoping a year from now I'll have ATT 3G phone that has a 3G icon on it, I miss the freedom of gsm and unlocked phones. Altho VZW is making big improvements on keeping their phones free from bloatware . ( thinking of smartphones )

No 7.2 will be almost certainly right away. There's no reason NOT to on new 3G build. But you're right, many sites won't have the backhaul to actually get 7.2mbps speeds. But I can't imagine they won't put 7.2MB HSPA in.

I would think it wouldn't be hard to put 3G in these areas. The backhaul is there already all they need is the right hardware, and there's not many towers to deal with compared to the big markets on the coasts.
Now I would thing MT, WY and the Dakotas will be last on the list on getting the 7.2 MB thats going on now as I would imagine that will take upgraded backhaul. This is all speculation on my part.

Yes, but it's not very interesting. Vicki Iseman (the one from the McCain scandal) keeps having meetings over and over with the FCC to discuss "the nation's continuing trend towards media consolidation and the lack of business opportunities for small, independent, and economically disadvantaged, businesses."

Well, I guess it has changed a little. A month ago here meetings were to discuss "the nation's continuing trend towards media consolidation and the lack of business opportunities for small, independent, economically disadvantaged, minority and women-owned businesses."

I guess she finally figured out that (at least for now) she can't explicitly ask the FCC to be racist against white males by giving minorities and women an outright advantage. So that part's gone from the more recent meetings at least. And that's a positive.

Anyways, all the filings of never-ending nonsense are recorded here:

Is there anywhere that shows the progress of the FCC approval?

If this means anything, AT&T has treated Vermont and the rest of the North Country quite nicely, even upgrading portions of the former RCC Unicel GSM network with UMTS/HSPA+. Population wise, Vermont is similar to Wyoming so I wouldn't worry too much.

It took 12 months from the switchover to bring UMTS/HSPA+ online, but the Alltel case may be different.

AT&T has filed with the FCC that they will be using 3G GSM in all the divestiture markets, for what it's worth.
