A rab's 100 'Greatest Metal Songs' thread doesn't sound like a bad idea.

This last was last updated in 2005.

Maybe we should make our own updates to it?

Songs like "Walk" you may have a valid point for, along with some of the softer tracks. In general, Pantera`s sound never really changed from that aggressive initial groove sound that they introduced on "Cowboys From Hell" to "Reinventing the Steel" in fact it got more agressive. To be honest I never saw anything fake about them, considering they were blasting out a new metal genre, how can somebody be fake by being original?

Had they sounded like say Iron Maiden or Metallica, I`d certainly agree with you about the fake aspect.

I am surprised that Death and King Diamond did not appear in this list.

The four artists with the most songs are the four most influential anyway, I would say this list is a great list to get somebody into metal and then hit them with the really agressive stuff later on.

I agree with a fair amount of this list, but I've gotta say, there's really too many songs for each individual artist and newer metal is pretty poorly represented. Also I'd say that not many genre's are spanned so for me this list is a bit too closed.

Quite a few of the other groups on there sound overpolished as well, its also part of the metal scene. Some of my all-time fav groups in other genres are overpolished as well. Again whether a group sounRAB raw or overpolished its not something I would assess the validity of the group with. I would base the validity of the group on originality, evolution, variety, technical ability and talent etc. and not on factors such as being polished up or raw.

Whether a band sweats it out in poverty, makes no compromise in their sound, gives their loyal fans what they want, really doesn`t have any real importance to me in musical terms. For me its just down to how good they sound regardless of whether its commercial or not.
