It's not obligatory but when you buy it off T-Mobile you will need a data plan but you can buy it and cancel and switch to a basic plan but you'll need to pay for that month. I've done that or you can buy a Sidekick off eBay or craigslist and just pop in your SIM card, either way works.
You need it to activate it. That's what happened to me.
Do I have to have internet on my sidekick? I was looking up phones on T-Mobile.com, and I was looking up the Sidekick LX and It says "A data service is required with this phone". Does that mean internet? And do i have to buy the data service even if I don't want it? I don't really want it, or need it. And would my phone work just fine without it?
