I don't think they really have a category for variety performers. I know there's one for Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, but it doesn't look like it's the kind of award that goes to an SNL performer. That was the category where Elaine Stritch won in 2004, for example, but the year after that, Hugh Jackman won for hosting the Tony Awards. Then the year after that, Barry Manilow won for some music special he must have done. So anyway, I guess they don't really have a category other than the comedy series one for people like SNL performers. They really should have a category for something like "Supporting Actor/Actress in a Variety, Comedy, or Music Series." The kind of work Amy Poehler and Kristin Wiig got nominated for is so different from the kind of work that Jane and the rest of the nominees got nominated for. It's a case of apples and oranges.

I think they should have a separate category for SNL type performances since they're so different in the way they're performed and just the performances in general can be random but I guess there aren't enough SNL-esque shows for there to be another category :shrug:

I guess not. The other shows that are usually in the category for awards like Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Program are stuff like The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and then all of the late night shows. Even those aren't really the same as SNL, so I guess that's why they do it the way they do. Still, it's not the best arrangement.
