    Mercury fillings. Are they dangerous?

I've just been told I need a filling it's round by the side of my mouth so for cosmetic reasons I would prefer a white one. I have been told I can get a metal filling on the NHS but I would have to go private for a white one. I'm not 100% sure what to do yet but I also remember lots of stories over the years about how bad the mercury fillings can be.
Is this true or did the press exagerate this just to scare us?
