Looking to start reading Western comic books, but where to begin?

I'm a big fan of movies like Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, etc, but I admit I have only touched one Western comic book in my entire life; thus far I have stuck to manga. I was disappointed in the Western comic book I tried reading, The Walking Dead, because I just didn't like the artwork. That has probably been one of the big reasons I never got into Western comics - the art was too kiddy or ridiculous (giaaaaaant boobs and muscles, etc). I also don't like how confusing some comics can be, with all the alternate universes, spin-offs, etc. It's like, I feel as though it would be impossible to try to start reading something like X-Men at this point. Does anyone have some suggestions on good comic books?
