How can I improve illumination, plastic rubbish microscope?

I am surprised how good the lenses are, for the bargain price. But the illumination is a pre-focus cheap light bulb (like cheap old torches/flashlights). It only shows the "peaks" of the surface brightly, and really limits the usefulness."proper" illumination is out of reach, but is something better achievable? I thought of something like a light diffuser, or else a different illumination, or daylight etc?
