Mmm! Where did you say you lived? I'm coming over for dinner. 8^)

Well I am an American and we have very little of our own foods. I consider myself very lucky to live on the West Coast where we have people from everywhere, and they all contribute to our culture, and the first way we learn about them is through their food. There is always some new thing to try out. 15 years ago Indian food was considered exotic, now it's almost as popular as Mexican food. (And Mexican food is an indigenous part of our culture here in California because the place was -part- of Mexico!)

My own people are Jewish, Eastern European. We have wonderful things like strudel, kugel, herring, gefilte fish, and special seasonal or holiday things like potato latkes and hamentaschen.

Sadly (or happily, depending on how you think of it) this cuisine is very high in fat and cholesterol, and is really designed for people who work hard all day. If you sit in front of a computer all day, this stuff will kill you! So we see it as a once-in-a-while thing. But the same can be said for what most people think of as -American- food--20 oz. steaks, fried chicken, chicken fried steaks, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits and gravy, basically anything with gravy. 8^) It worked fine 150 years ago when people worked on a farm all day.

Fry bread, Salmon, Chada Bread, all kinds of seafood cooked in every way you can think, wild fruits and berries....yum yum...especially the mountain strawberries, smaller than your smallest finger nail, but packed with more flavor than those monster strawberries at the grocery stores...
