well Carlos Gracie was taught jujitsu by Mitsu Maeda but what he taught Carlos was a bit special because it was mostly ground while others would teach basically throws and take downs more than ground part which Maeda was awesome at which is the reason that he taught Carlos ground aspect. then Carlos taught his brothers. Carlos competed in fights and beaten them all he was undefeated, Carlos was in a different physic than Helio, Carlos was short and a bit fat while Helio was tall and very thin but not that tall either. Helio got sick which made Carlos not train him but Helio mastered the techniques by just watching. Carlos opened an academy at that time. One time Carlos was late and Helio was the only man in the academy. there are people who paid good money in order to train with Carlos. So as Carlos was late Helio took the class and taught the people and they were surprised with the knowledge he had. Carlos then appeared and apologized for the lateness but the people told him no worries as some of them wanted to continue with Helio. Helio thought that the throws and take downs needed to much force to execute. so with trying and error he developed the throws and take downs without exerting force and using leverage and depending on technique. Carlos and Helio thought what could be done better on the ground remember both, same concept with trials and error they founded how to put more pressure and how to get out of pressure, the ability to control people, and fighting from the back in an offensive way and defense against about everything could be done on the ground. Carlos depended more so on the top game by putting pressure on everything while Helio depended fighting on the back such as submissions and sweeps anything could done from the bottom. but the take downs and throws were all Helio remember that also. let me put now in a simple way it was both who Discovered it. thats why they were both 10 Dan. the other brother were learning from Carlos but they also did learn From Helio.

i dont think there is a real division here, bjj was first taught by carlos so he is the true founder of the style and diet of gracie jujitsu his brother helio added to the style and dosent remember the old style without his additions so modern bjj is truely created by helio as we know it today, it will likley evolve but the subtle details of HOW to do things wont be changed like helio changed them, he made it easier for the little guy
