Writing a young adult murder mystery/thriller/suspense book. Need some help?

I'm having a hard time trying to develop the serial killer. I want my serial killer to be unique, not one that is too cliche. I don't want him to be some crazy cannibal, however I want him to be pretty intellectual in the way he does his crimes. I want him to have an occupation too. I was thinking a priest or a professor, but it just seems like it would be ordinary. I want him to have a weird occupation. And I need more locations for where he performs his crimes. Hospitals and abandoned places are way too overused. ANy suggestions??
should i give the guy a certain look? a face filled with scars? An eye that is blind?
and how should i make him kill people? Should he leave clues behind for the protagonist, a note suggesting another location. I'm trying to look up other ways other than the typical mutilation, and stabbing tactic. It's hard thinking of this stuff-_-
