What codec or file does the VLC Media Player use that Windows Media Player doesn't have?

I have a few videos that will play sound an all in the VLC Media Player just fine, but they will only play as sound in Windows Media Player. They're MPEG, and I thought that WMP could play those. I don't mind VLC but I would prefer to use WMP, what codec or whatever do I need to download for it to work?
I understander what you mean, Windows Media Player is rather annoying, but I've used it for song long I'm not used to much else.
