That was the last option. Typhoon can redirect the plane as splitfire redirect V1 during WWII.
If you think that such a decision under any circumstances would be taken by any one single individual, you are operating out of your pay grade.
I suspect Cameron would still be dithering as they wretched plane took out the Olympic stadium and Buckingham Palace! Although God forbid it ever comes anything close to that!
i dont even know why media are wasting time thinking about airliners the threat is from small light planes and helos or mortar devices the hijacking of an airliner is a very low risk at this moment due to increased security the terrorirst will search for easy target like as not no olympic site will be targeted whille all the attentntion is on east london olympics i expect to see a large attack on a major british city or even london but not in olypic areas if however olypmics is targeted then it will be via the lghnt airgcaraft route this is why for 2 months around the olympics no private light aircraft pilot is allowed to fly unless they have files a flight plan wih ATLAS CONTROL nameed sdpecial flight plan unit set up for olympics today if a farmer takes off in his plane from his farm strip he is ok to do so does not need to inform anyone unless he is goin into controlled airspace but during olympics he better not be so blases if he does he will be tracked from take off and likely to encounter two typhooons telling him to land as notice has been given to airmen stating major restrictions and the need to infom and get permission on a flight plan this will mean less such pilots in the air allowing the mod to concentrate on unid non flight planned or targets squawking the transpnder code for hijack likke the helicopter over bath the other week its likley that any air attack terror wise will be from a light aircraft packed with explosives and not a jet airliner i am currently montiring the exericse radio traffic on military radio channels and can confirm the emphasis is on light aircraft as suspected trade between awacs and fighters has started in last 30 mins with so far movements of light aircraft from panhanger near hatfield being main targets for trade so forget airliners yes they will do some with that in tests as well and militarty aircraft as enemy but main worry this yr is light aircraft which is why strong new restrictions atre in place over a whole 2 months before and after so mod know exaclty who is in air wheras today for exmaple any flight from panshanger can just take of when hhe wishes and no one in air traffic has to know he csan fliy without going into any airspace controlled in july and august he wont any take off from any pad or field will have to have contacted atlas control and file a flight plan if they dont and some microlight glider or ligh aircraft just goes up then expect to have company of 2 fighters snd made to land and be fined or arrested
Hammond once looked a picture of Charles de Galle and thought that he was looking at his reflection. So, rather than seek help for his narcissism and delusion, he started to act out his self aggrandising fantasy. He is well known for Nimby decisions, so as any fall out will not be on Runnymede and Weybridge, his constituency, he doesn't care. It looks good, it looks military, it looks decisive, it looks like a decision the great man would take - Hammond, not de Galle!
Hammond is a psychopath; the decision to shoot down an aircraft over London would inevitably result in mass casualties and should not be taken lightly. (Wouldn't the order lie with the Prime Minister, not the Defence Secretary?)
No one will shoot at anything, it's all window dressing to "prove" we are under threat and we have a Government who will protect us, all part of the fear machine; remember Bird Flu, SARS, Spanish Flu, Swine Fever, Toll roads, weapons of mass destruction, commies? Who would give the order Captain Mainwaring? Who would push the button Pyke?

Any such decision would be taken by Cameron. Duffer: the ultimate decision would be Cameron's.
