My dad has thyroid cancer and has had surgery and treatment, but is still progressing?

My dad came down with Valley Fever and because of the testing, they realized he had thyroid cancer as well. Further tests were done, and then came surgery, he had his entire thyroid gland removed, and then radiation. He just had a doctors visit a few days ago and they told him that it has progressed to stage 3. They tell him there's still plenty of hope. But still... what does this mean? He's had it removed, and has had treatment but it still resigns in his throat and is progressing. The only sign I see is his constant napping.

I don't' really have much more information to give because my dad is very private with things, and in a car accident years back he lost his short term memory so half the things the doctor says he can't remember anyways. But I was just hoping someone could answer with any personal experiences, and any helpful information.
