verizon wireless flip phone if you open it does it automatically open your messages in your inbox?

i have a verizon wireless flip phone and i sent a couple messages while waiting for my husband to get home from work, he was really late.. he shows up 6 minutes after i sent the messages. when he came in i checked the phone and the message envelope symbol was open... he insists he left the phone open on the seat of the car and he never saw them that they must have opened themselves cause the phone was open. ??? i am not that dumb...is it true? don't you have to actually press to open and read them? Thanks
