Toon Zone Talkback - "Dragonball Z: Dragon Box 1" Your Wish Has Been Granted

QFT. Barnes and Noble, Borders, and Suncoast charged MSRP, for the most part. Best Buy is able to sell anime for a better price. Occasionally, anime will even see reductions in price, some as low as $5.99 per volume, as was the case with several FUNimation titles last year. Recently, I've also convinced one of the inventory managers for the east coast to send my store anime which we would have otherwise not received, such as Spice and Wolf, Sgt. Frog, Monster, and others. Thankfully, these titles have been selling. I have faith that this will show those in charge of what we do and don't carry that every title deserves its fair chance.

Back on topic: Until the inevitable Blu-Ray release, this Dragon Box Z collection is the definitive edition of Dragon Ball Z available on the market, and thus far, I've found it to be worth the purchase. The packaging is sturdy, and the sleeves that hold the discs are also quite durable. The packaging is definitely an upgrade from the orange brick sets, and the artwork is more attractive, in my hurable opinion. The booklet is full of a library's worth of information concerning the first 42 episodes, and although it alone does not make this set worth a purchase, it could provide incentive for the 20 or 30 fans who haven't already purchased DBZ. I jest. I'm someone who has the original Pioneer edited releases, the nine Ultimate Uncut volumes, and the first two orange brick season sets, and I still found myself purchasing this Dragon Box Z set. The widescreen for the brick sets didn't bother me once I adjusted to it, but it is nice to watch Z in its original aspect ratio.

Thank you, FUNimation, for this release. However, I do hope you wait at least a year or two after the final volume of Dragon Box Z is released before you find the need to release the series again, as we all know it's inevitable.

Fair enough, I suppose I should be glad that BB even still carries it at all, and it's not like their prices are any worse than Barnes and Noble or Borders, which are the other two places that really carry a decent amount of anime now that Suncoast has shut down (and it's not like their prices were any good either).

I actually have several loyal customers who come in to purchase anime. We've sold through a shipment of the first Dragon Box Z volume, believe it or not. Where some will not pay the brick-and-mortar price, others will. I will not say that we have the best prices for anime, but as far as I've seen for brick-and-mortar stores, we are close.

I am sure that those who made their purchase of the first Dragon Box Z volume will return in February for the second volume and again whenever the third volume sees release.

Just out of curiosity, Mynd, how many retailers do you know of, besides Best Buy, that will advertise anime?

At the ridiculous prices brick-and-mortar Best Buys charge, I'm not surprised. There's really no reason to buy DVRAB from Best Buy unless you're bringing in a competitor's flyer for them to price-match. With so many better deals online, most of them with free shipping, why waste your money?

Yes, the Japanese audio is astonishingly better (and, of course, so it the video).

I'm passing on the boxes. I was thinking about picking up #1 out of curiousity, but after all the money I have spent on DBZ over the years, and the fact that I recently finished watching the series via the season sets, I am happy with what I have and do not see a purpose to buy the series again until Kai is out on Blu-Ray. On the other hand, is the Jp audio an improvement? That was the only thing that truly bothered me in the season sets is that the audio was so bad in some episodes, whether it was full of drop outs, static noise, etc. Do these boxes fix them? If so, maybe I'll pick them up when they are on sale. I do know that at the Best Buy I work at, we have not sold a single Dragon Box since the day it came out.

BTW, the Funimation rep at NDK back in Sept said during his panel that they are in talks about being able to do Kai on both DVD and Blu-Ray at the same time.

Actually, before this release Dragon Ball Z has never had a North American release with the proper opening and ending footage for each episode, as well as the next episode previews.

The multi-million dollar "You will never have this remastered footage" remastering done frame-by-frame by hand aside, of course.

I'll buy a Dragon Ball dragonbox if it comes out (and it will) but these DBZ dragonbaoxes and the Gt ones I wont get because if the only real extra is the Booklet than what's the point, since all i care about is the shows episodes anyway.

It's all about smart shopping, and by that I mean at RightStuf, where you can get both of the sets currently available for order for under fifty bucks.
