Well lincoln didnt give any speeches through the general elections. But republican officals did for him. When the candidates were chosen, it was all talk to keep the union whole, and change from a James Buchanan government. . Not much slavery talk, other than saying if they are freed, they would ship them off to anywhere but here.

Lincoln recieved the lowest percentage of a winning candidate, while the turnout was 2nd highest in history. Only 38% voted for him. He wasn't liked.

Lincoln was not the most popular president of his time and was elected simply because the north was more populous than the south. But, we all know that it is history which will decide the true measure of a man and time has proven that he was all that....and then some.

What issues was Abe Lincoln facing going into the 1860 election?

    Hey everyone,
I know he was facing issues with the south and north, the south being dissatisfied with the way the government was going...But what other big issues did he face? I mean like what was his pitch to the public to convince them to vote for him in 1860? Couldn't another candidate have done the same things that he did? Was his background even THAT impressive? I just cant understand why he was so popular... He didn't even really have an education and he grew up poor. Many of the qualities that Americans do not look for in a president...
I wikipedia'd the other candidates and they didn't look that bad. What do you guys think? Is Abe really all that?
