Is there a law against allowing employees to use a gym located on the work site?

I work as a custodian at a school and when i started i was told i was allowed to use the gym as a benefit. but up until recently i went in and there was a mess in the weight room. I was finished work so i worked out around the mess next day the vice principal told me i wasnt allowed to use the weight room because it is against the law unless i had supervision. I always have a partner in there. he said if i got hurt i could sue the school. mean while he works out and hes alone or with his very young son. there is also 2 students i graduated with that use the workout room one of which has his dads keys to get in. so is there a law stating that the school is responsible for me while im working out even if im not on shift? and those other boys to be allowed to use the gym still
