What to do about my cold house!

SounRAB promising. I was supprised that Im getting it done totally free as I dont receive any benefits but agree with its worth asking

I think thats what went wrong last time. I had about 6" in but with me walking on it constantly its made it flat. I'll have to build a platform of some sort.

They are a good idea but I think 2"x2" screwed tiraber would do the job ok.

What to do about my cold house!

Putting 8" of additional insulation in the loft doesn't do much good if then compress it with boxes of stuff!

Our loft has 12" of blown in insulation and it effectively renders the loft useless. I could probably build a false floor above the insulation, but as soon as you put a box on and compress it it will lose a huge chunk of its r-value!

What to do about my cold house!

    Nice one!!

That's a good result, just goes to show sometimes it's worth asking! :-)

I definatly think we noticed the difference since having the cavity done, the heating isn't on for as long and it seems to stay warm.

    Happy days so far!!

What to do about my cold house!

    Hi,
Hope it's been of some help to you.

I was told that my house didn't have cavities, firstly by the inspection guy at the council, he used google street view to look at the property (!), then the guy who came to size up the house to have the cavity wall insulation done said they looked like the ones with no cavity, I said that I had drilled through it myself putting an outside socket on and know I went through a cavity. He drilled various test holes and stuck his bendy telescope thing into the holes, and of course there it was, the cavity.

So don't let anyone say you don't have cavities without them checking PROPERLY first!

What to do about my cold house!

only just seen this htread and read from the first page upto here lol

our 1 bedroom flat is in a big old converted house and alot of the things you have said i can relate too ie having the thermo on 21 constantly just to get the flat "warm" then once you turn the heating of it gets cold very quickly and using extra duvets (we use 2 15togs i think), using £3-5 on gas a day

we have massive single pain windows probley 10ft by 4ft so we always have the curtains closed to keep the warmth in and very high ceilings which i think doesnt help as it takes longer to heat the room up?

ive asked about getting double glazing fitted but was told its a listed building so no

think il phone tomorrow and see if the building has had cavity walls done or maybe it doesnt have cavity walls

all in tho been a very good read
