antique wooden chest with high arch. What it's purpose?

I bought an antique piece of furniture. It's made with wood, and has an an arch. A pole goes across the two ends it. Does anyone know what this is and what it's for? It's not wide enough to put hangers through. There's no shelves to place anything.
There are no doors on the piece other than a bottom storage bin.
    Here are reference pictures.
    Thanks for the help.
