AllCast Hits Google Play Sans Chromecast Compatibility - PC Magazine

    • December 23, 2013 04:51pm EST

Developer Koushik Dutta today released his AllCast Android app into the Google Play store, allowing users to share personal media directly on the TV via a number of streaming devices.
Dutta initially built AllCast, also known as AirCast, to share local files like photos or videos stored in a phone's gallery, on Dropbox, or in Google Drive, over the Google Chromecast dongle for TVs.
But when an August Chromecast update broke his service, Dutta kept chipping away at AllCast, launching it in beta earlier this month and making it available for free to Android owners today.
With a focus on open DLNA devices, AllCast users can simply tap on a photo or video on their device to play it back on the TV screen via "almost anything you can hook up to your TV," Dutta says in the video below. That includes Roku boxes, Apple TV, Xbox 360, Xbox One , Samsung, Panasonic, and LG Smart TVs, Google TV hardware, and more—just not the Chromecast.
