If I have Osteochondral Deffect in my knee and the articular cartlige is still in tact,is operation nessecary?

I am a 17 year old male, we recently discovered I have an Osteochondral Defect in the patella of my femur. It has 3 cm by 3 cm in width and depth. Though I have this defect, the MRI shows that my articular cartlige is still intact. Is there any kind of operation that would be used to treat this, or does the cartlige have to be damaged ( I also have been playing sports all my life, baseball and football)
