What is the best singular vehicle to save?

My daughter is an infant. I am in my early 30s and figure I would need about 35-40 years to retirement.

I wanted to do a 529 account with a Roth IRA to take care of college and retirement. Is there a better way to consolidate both goals into one sigle account, placing my daughter as the beneficiary? I am starting from the bottom, as my daughter isn't a year old yet so I have several years to save - but I really just want to take advantage of the tax shelter and compound interest.

Any ideas?
