What CGI animation package?

I used to Model and edit 3D assets years ago, but I've just recently considered getting into 3D CGI animation, and I was wondering, what Program should I choose? I'm a complete beginner, but I don't want to start in one program that's limited just for training purposes, and then move to another.

Any ideas what application a beginner should use, that's both ideal for starting, and able to handle even industry CGI animation and effects? I'm currently looking at Cinema 4D, but wonder if its worth it.
