My sony dvd recorder won't record?

I have a Sony DVD Multifunction recorder and it has been working great for these past 6 months but now whenever I try burning something off the tv or vcr it just has this "waiting on input" signal thing on the front screen. And it only shows that when I press record. Even before I press record I can see the video off the tv on the dvd recorder screen but it vanishes when I press record. I hope this made sense.
