? battery reading on Motorola Droid?

This has happened before where instead of a battery reading there is just a solid ? inside the battery reading area. In the past a simple restart has fixed this but now it wont go away. I've tried restarting, pulling the battery, and plugging it in to no avail? Is there anything else I can do or has my phone tragically lost its sense proprioception?
