I usually change mine once a month when I do a water change. If it is just floss, sponges or plain filter cartridges, remove and rinse them well in some of the water you have just drained from the tank and put back into place. This will save some of the bacteria that has colonized on the filter media. If it as filter cartridge with activated carbon inside. The activated carbon will become saturated after a point and its surface will not be able to hold anymore and it will begin to leach toxins back into the tank. Either refill the cartridge or replace.

When you change the filter media in the tank, it will only remove a small portion of the bacteria that you need. So it will not upset the tanks cycle.
