I just signed up with AT&T. I want to ask my friends if they are on AT&T, so I know who I can call for free (mobile to mobile). I am sure AT&T wouldn't like that, but can they prevent me from finding / saving such information? Is this illegal?

Nope. Not illegal. I have an app that I can find out if they are on AT&T, and it was provided by iTunes, the iPhone App store.
Good Luck,
Jeff
Great! I have an iPhone too, which app is that?
I looked and looked, but I can't find it. I saw it when browsing through apps a little while ago. Maybe do a google search...something to the effect of att number lookup or something.

Why would asking your friends what provider they use be illegal?
That's what I was wondering!!
You can use these websites from your computer to check which carrier issued the number or currently is providing service on it:
SearchBug - Landline or Cellular Phone Number?

There is also something on the AT&T site that you can put in their number and it will tell you if they are mobil to mobile. (read FREE)
That would be really funny if it was Illegal.
There is no way such a law would be passed. A wireless company's rules do not have the force of law. If a carrier did not want you to make mobile to mobile calls knowingly, they would not offer a special discount for those type of calls.
