The biggest thing I can't get my head around is why they promoted this as live and then made no attempt to cover up that it wasn't live at all.

I could easily memorise, say, 5 facts each about 7 people in the space of a few minutes, and I don't have any particular memory skills. I'm sure Derren would have no trouble at all doing this either. Plus it's even easier for him to remember if he's wearing his earpiece.
Still, you seem to have a better idea of how the trick was done, so maybe your way is the correct one.
I can't figure out your way, but does it have anything in common with the old card trick where you spread the deck face down, get the volunteer to pick carRAB, and each time you "predict" what the card is, while actually you're simply glancing at each card after your prediction and saying the one that you just saw. (That trick works on the principle that you only need to see one card in advance, which reminded me of what you said about The Oracle trick.)

Forgive me if I don't believe this story at face value. What are the chances of the hypnotist in question just happening to be on the same coach trip as you (or did he plan it all?). And what are the chances of the hypnotist's assistant just happening to be your lodger? (Or was it all pre-planned?) It all sounRAB quite incredible.
Plus, I find your lack of punctuation a bit odd. With respect, it doesn't do your credibility any favours.
