    Greatest Bassists

The bass playing on What's Going On is incredible and while I'm not big on Marvin Gaye it definitely made the album much more enjoyable.

I also find Andy Rourke's bass playing is criminally underrated. I know it's pretty easy to stand in the shadow of Morrissey and Marr but songs like Girlfriend in a Coma, Unhappy Birthday have very spunky and great bass lines. Unhappy Birthday in particular, the bass line is the best part of the song. I think he has a unique style and should be given much more credit than he does. So many people completely ignore Joyce and Rourke it's ridiculous, like last year when someone offered Morrissey and Marr a million dollars or something to do a reunion tour together and didn't say a word to Rourke or Joyce, it's ridiculous.

Man, for as much as I've used Bill Laswell's loop collections, I never realized he was a bassist. I must check him out. Thanks Skaligojurah.

Claypool plays some awesome stuff but he probably isn't the best bassist.

What boo boo said, I posted that list as an example of his bass playing to illustrate to a meraber who claimed he'd never heard any of his stuff.
    Which obviously everyone has.

Take the first one on that list.
My Girl by the Temptations. Ask anyone how that song goes and the chances are they'll 'der' the bass line intro instead of singing the opening lyrics.
On a note of interest Geddy Lee is a great admirer of Jamerson.
I'll even argue that he's the most influential bass player ever.

I don't know a whole hell of a lot about bass, but Victor Wooten, John Entwistle and Geddy Lee are pretty awesome.

Motown producer Norman Whitfield preferred him over Jamerson. (the man was obviously tone deaf.)

Favourite Babbitt contribution...'War' by Edwin Starr.

While Flea is still my favourite, I don't think anyone can deny the greatness of Jaco. This never fails to blow my mind.

And I'll leave this thread open since we don't have a General best bassist thread outside the muso section.
