Because the basic 10 commandments (although they were written for the Jews (OR ISRAELITES) are re-mentioned in the NT, so they apply to Gentiles (Christians) as well.

The Ten Commandments were first spoken by God to Moses for the people of Israel (Exodus 20). Think of the 10 commandments - Thou shalt not steal, lie, kill... worship false gods, commit adultery etc (OLD TESTAMENT)

Here is them basically re-mentioned :
    1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NEW TESTAMENT)
"9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God"

"you are not under law, but under grace" (Romans 6:14). But Christians are under the moral law as revealed in the Ten Commandments as a rule of life.

They're just a good healthy set of rules to live by IMO.

    Take care!

Why do so many Christians cite the 10 commandments as part of their core beliefs?

They leave out so much from the old testament and accept this set of 10 rules. Why?
