Star Trek Communicator: Custom-built Nokia N76 Prototype

    Hi folks:

I rarely post on HoFo outside the Sprint/Nextel forums, but I thought people here might like to see some video of a custom-built N76 built internally at Nokia sometime prior to 2009. It's a working evaluation model of a Star Trek communicator.

    Link below. Enjoy!

That is definitely something you don't see everyday. Judging by the font on that instruction paper, it seems this actually was made by nokia in relation to last year's movie. Nice find!

Thanks! I believe the limited internal run of these was built to evaluate the possibility of selling these - probably for a special edition tie-in to the 2009 Trek film. Of course, this didn't happen - they went with a re-badged 5800. As I'm as big a Trek geek as I am a phone enthusiast, this is nice to have in the collection.

That comes off better than the R2D2 Edition of the Droid 2.

That should really go to Motorola. Both the Ming and the Razr look much more like the communicator and tricorder respectively. What they could do though is have a bluetooth speakerphone done like a pin. Have capacitive touch so it activates the same way the com badge was supposed to work. Would be even more wicked if they play around with using bones to transfer sound.

^ The Ming/KRAVE was indeed a dead-ringer for the classic comm. And I'd love to see a commbadge bluetooth device myself.

In other news, this phone/communicator has just been featured at TrekMovie.com. Not much story that's not already covered by the video, but plenty more photos: TrekMovie: Check Out Prototype of Nokia Star Trek Phone That Never Was

Yeah ... I was definitely lucky to snag it. Just good timing.

Can't believe this made Engadget. I love those guys and have wanted to write for them for years.

Congratulations! This was an Ebay win? If so what was the lot listed as, so I can look in case another shows up?
