The main reasons why genetically modified (GM) foods have been produced by bio-tech companies is to increase crop protection, reduce pesticide use, feed Third-World countries and make food cheaper. According to the World Health Organization, genetically-modified organisms are organisms where "the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally... It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from one organism into another, also between non-related species." For example, corn crossed with a gene from Bt bacteria to produce its own insecticidal toxin.
