i've ised minnows in the past but was wondering if crappie are good bait for posible keeper bass? since they're usually bigger than minnows and the say use the size bait for what you want to catch

As GMB said, it is illegal (here in california anyway, most likely all states) and it would take a considerably large bass to be able to down even a smaller sized crappie. If it does work, be sure to use a light drag setting, and don't strike prematurely.
Also, GMB has genius advice about what to say if you were to be caught. It may be a sarcastic statement, but hey. The warden certainly couldn't disprove it. Good luck.
ALSO: Personally, I don't like the idea of keeping or otherwise killing juvenile fish of any kind. Sure, they may be eaten by larger fish anyway, but I find it wrong to contribute to their death. The big ones, no problem. Eat up. And serve 'em up for the bigger fish. But it's the juveniles that are going to continue the population, should the big ones all be caught.
