html move table to the top of an image?

So on my website I want to have a side bar on the left of the screen where I have links to other pages on my site. So I created a new table and set the background of the table to an image of a sidebar I had made earlier. My problem is that now when create text in the table it is in the middle of my picture and not at the top. Any ideas? Thank you for your answers I very much appreciate all of them.
