Feminists

How many feminists are in existence today? Not one person can answer this question. Many do not even know how to determine, by looking at a woman, if she is a feminist. If a woman is a feminist, what type of feminist is she? There are many different forms of feminism in which a woman can believe. Though there is not a accurate definition of what a feminist is, there is three basic meanings: those who fight for women to gain more rights, also known as woman power, those who just want women to be equal as men, and those who believe in true, natural beauty.

Every woman wants to be placed higher in the world than she actually is - whether it is in the work place or at home. Though times have changed since a woman's place is in the kitchen was once a motto; women are still made to feel useless by men. Men have put women down for years not letting them be their own person and not letting them see how much the can accomplish on the own. Men feel because they are men, they are the superior gender, which is not true in the least. They may have been in the past, but women have started to break through the barriers men have put up, and being successful at doing so. This revolution had been known as womanpower.

Men still believe that women should obtain jobs like secretaries and nurses instead of being the bosses or the doctors. It is hard on any man's ego to have a woman in a superior position to them or to have a wife bring home a higher income than he, but they seem to be more understanding to the situation. However, women have not taken this into consideration. They feel that they have been below the average man, that it is time to show the world what women are made of. Women are not cruel by doing this, because they know they have the correct qualifications to be in the superior position to the man.

The second characterization of a feminist could be need and want to be equal with men. These feminists do not necessarily want to be in a superior position to men, but instead to be treated and respected as his equal. This battle has been happening before women had the right to vote. When women were allowed to vote, just the same as a man, they started to slowly fight for more rights. The battle has been a slow, tiring one, but women in the 1960's made the battle a bit easier. Many men are not thrilled with this movement either. Some still feel that women deserve to be treated as inferior to them, but this has not stopped woman from fighting to gain the respect that they are entitled to. Even with men still holding the females back, women are continuing to fight for what is just, especially in the work force.

In the work force, no one seems to know why women still get paid less than men for doing the same job and filling the same requirements. This could be the result in a discrimination lawsuit with a company. More than not, women seem to win these arguments. Why should she not be paid the same salary for the same job as the man? This question is still floating around society today. This would have been the usual and accepted before the movement for equality had taken place, but it is still taking place today. Most often than not, the owner of the company believes that men should still be superior to women. This reason alone is enough for women to fight for equality.

Thirdly, feminists seem to believe in true, natural beauty. They have the need to be accepted for who they are not what society wants them to be. Why alter the gifts that God had given to them with make-up, shaving or plastic surgery. Many women feel as if they need their "face" to go out into public because of the restrictions men have put onto women in the past. These feminists are just trying to change this mistake from the past. If men do not wear make-up, shave areas on their body, or try to hide their true selves, why should women do this to impress men? Women should not be afraid to look how they would on any normal day.

Look at when women go out on a date, they feel their hair has to be perfect, as does their make-up and their body have to be shaved. The reason for all of this is to try to impress a man. Why would any man in his right mind accept this behavior? Would not a man prefer to see this woman for who she truthfully is, instead of who she is not? This is what has become a "natural" thing for a woman to do, for her to put on her "war-paint" and fight for a man's attention. If a women had to fight for the attention of a man, would that not mean that the man is not interested in the first place?

In this day and age, men need to be cautious of what they say or how they act in front of a woman. The very last thing that men need to do in today's society is to demean a woman. With many a woman involved in feminism, the belief of being the equal to a man instead of the inferior, the world is no longer a man's world. Women may be gaining their rights slowly, but the world has already seen the changes, especially with those who are in the work place. It has been a long journey for strong women, but the power of feminism is still leading the way into the 21st century.
