What is the best, no hassle internet security program?

I want one that doesn't end up being worse than the viruses they are supposed to protect me from. I'm tired of the Trend Micro popups, automatic updates when I'm in the middle of something, automatic scans also when I'm in the middle of something, plus it slows me down more than a virus would and causes my computer to malfunction.
It seems to me that most internet security programs basically turn themselves INTO a virus once they expire and need to be updated. What will speed up and clean up my computer without making me want to pull my hair out?
