Is a 50mm F/1.8 prime lens acceptable for wide angle weather photography use?

I have a Nikon D80 with the kit lens 18-55mm F/4.8 and the 55-200mm F/5.6 but I'd really like to get something faster for all around wide angle use but my passion is shooting time lapse storms especially around dusk. Is the 50mm prime good for that as well?

Wide angle weather photography needs a wide angle lens. The 50 mm lens on your camera is a medium telephoto.

You can use the 10-24 mm zoom as a weather lens, however the 10.5 mm fisheye would be the best choice.

For now, use your 18-55 mm at 18 mm.

You would benefit immensely by attending a few classes in photography. After just one, you would know that a 50 mm is no wide angle lens (except if it is attached to a medium format camera)
