1991 Toyota Corolla: brake lights don't work with headlights on, but work...

...with headlights off? solutions? This is a 1991 Geo Prizm which is a mechanical twin to a Toyota Corrolla of the same year. The brake lights work during the day when the headlights are off, but when the headlights are turned on at night the brake lights stop working. Any ideas? Are the headlights and brake lights operating on the same circuit?

rusty bulb connectors in the tail and brake lites. Try spraying with WD40 and see if it makes a difference.
