The Looking Glass Wars series is good, I believe the first two have been released(The Looking Glass Wars and Seeing Redd). They are a kind of alternate-universe Alice in Wonderland.

Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell are excellent, but I'm not sure they would fit the type of material you are looking for.

A Great and Terrible Beauty and its sequel Rebel Angels

Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan - I absolutely adore these books, and they're quick to read.

And yes, you could always go back to the tried-and-true Harry Potter.

    Shameful plug here...

Gaston Leroux's The Phantom Of The Opera.

Either that, or Susan Kay's version called 'Phantom'.

I'm reading the first one now, actually.

If gruesome and gothic romance isn't your taste (it's nothing like that monstrosity called Twilight, I assure you.) There's always the friendly teen ones like Sisterhood Of The Travelling Pants, (can't remember the author I'm afraid) or R.L Stine's Feat Street collection.

    are you male or female?
Unisex books: Harry Potter, Charlie Bone, The Door Within, Isle of Swords
Female: The Luxe, The Summoning, The Frog Princess (by E.D. Baker as the other is a picture book)
    Male: Not sure

It depends where your (or whoever the person you're searching books for) interests lie.
If you like history, I recommend "Letters from Rifka" by Karen Hesse. It may be a bit easy for 13 to 15 year-old kids, but it is still a good book.
I also recommend "Song of the Sparrow" by Lisa Ann Sandell. It is a whole book of poems taking place during King Arthur's time, following a young girl's journey finding herself.
    Hope this helps!
