i would start by figuring out why its running bad. the gears jerking is probably caused by the engine running bad. you should have someone look at it. its probably not worth putting a new engine in it. but it might be worth fixing if it can be done cheap. i wouldnt put to much money in it though.

I just bought a 1992 Ford Ranger with 150k miles on it. I only paid $250

dollars for it.? It has new tires, brakes, rotors, and plugs. I must say that I am considering putting a new engine and transmission in it. It's a 5 speed. The thing runs horrible. Gears are jerking bad, smokes pretty bad. I don't know anything about cars so I am just wondering whether or not to try fixing something on the motor or just replace it entirely. Any ideas??? All ideas are welcome... Thank you for your time...

I would have to say that buying something like that is not a very good idea. You should junk it and buy something that runs okay. If you really want to make $6500 in repairs, its your money. But you could buy a good running ranger for that much. (My brother has a 94 Ranger with 129k miles and needed to replace the engine and the transmission and spent $7,000)

You need to find out what repairs need to be made before deciding; find a mechanic or shop that can do diagnostic testing
