I test drove both and loved Mazda 3 and absolutely hated Civic. In fact, even though these cars are in the same class, they drove completely different. Mazda 3 felt very tight and sporty, with great handling characteristics and precision. Exterior styling and interior materials and fit and finish are superb as well.

Honda Civic, on the other hand, felt too low on the ground and I felt every bump. The steering is softer and the double stacked odometer looked weird and distracting. I had to get the seat all the way up to see over the 2 displays. Didn't like it.

In terms of dependability, both cars will do fine if you take good care of them. Several people I talked to prefer Mazda 3 over the Civic and a good friend of mine who has Mazda 3 is very satisfied. In the last 2 years he hasn't had a single problem with the car.
