Mosquitos have a lot of offspring with a short gestational period that have a high mortality rate, they don't nurture their offspring but rather leave them to fend for themselves, they reach maturity quickly and have short lifespans.
Elephants have a long gestational period, they produce comparitively few offspring but take the time to nurture their offspring in a family-centered environment, they are slow to mature to adulthood but have longer life spans.
