AFI's Top 100 Movies

    I've watched 53.

And I actually disagree with those of you who said it was a crap list. These movies are so much more than box office hits. They've achieved great cinematography, direction, acting... sure, not every single great film that was ever made is on the list, but I was able to get to really good films through this list. Even if they weren't on it. Say yesterday, I watched Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief which was absolutely brilliant! Personally, I think it was better than some Hitchcock's that were on the list.

The box-office hits of today can barely be called an art form anymore. Jazzed up special effects and girls who can't actually play but are there just for people to stare at are not what film is supposed to be about (not saying that all of the films out there now are like that).

Yeah, I agree that of course these movies are classics but I was just saying that there are plenty of films that are more recent that should at least get a look in dont you think? Not just because they made millions at the box office but because they were very well made. But don't worry, I will check out a few I've recently done a course on the Golden age of Hollywood at school so some of the films on the list have sparked quite an interest.

And Profaine Angel you make a very good point when you said:

I guess I didn't look into it that deep. I'm feeling I should take back what I said

I definitely agree. All these movies are classics. Movies that are hot right now don't deserve to be on the list just yet, but i'm sure in 20 years all these movies will be classics. Like Passion Of The Christ

Ditto Sam...remember people this list is top 100 movies of all time, not what's hot at the moment that will probably be forgotten in 5 years time! No, I don't think Citizen Kane is the best movie of all time by a longshot (zzzz ) but from a cinematography point of view it's more deserving than Titanic which was more just spectacle and special effects. Perhaps when they redo the list in 50 years time, Titanic will be on it. (Btw - the small print reads The nominated films were all made in the first 100 years of American cinema (1896-1996). Movies produced after 1996 were not included. Wasn't Titanic from 1997 anyway?)

Another point is that for a film to be considered great it has to be able to stand the test of time, to be able to charm several generations and never wildly date itself. Who can even say how LOTR will be received in 20 years time?

I could not disagree with you more. Have you seen the old classics on the list? They're definitly worth seeing. You'll probably fall in love with them. I used to be in the same boat as you and then I took a chance and dove into the world of classics. I can't get out now; I'm hooked. I think that there were a few things on there that should not have been, but I probably wouldn't replace them with modern movies. I'd put in a really kick ass silent. There aren't enough of them that are mentioned and there are so many that were masterpieces.
