    at the moment they can't the electricity or hydrogen they use comes from fossil fuel sources as we don't have enough nuclear power stations, also we do not have enough generating capacity and they have no range, the batteries cost $5000 and will only last 2-4 years, if 25% of the population switched to electric cars tomorrow the country would grind to a halt and everyone's air conditioners would stop working as the power companies would have to shed load by reducing voltage and cutting power to large areas, also hydrogen is massively expensive to produce and expensive to store
