I would personally recommend LimeWire. It has no spyware, is free, and has an intuitive interface. The features are simple enough for newbies to use, yet advanced users won't yearn for options. Other clients may be infected with spyware, have buggy interfaces, or simply frustrate you to death. Give LimeWire a try. But don't form an opinion about it until you've tried out some of the others. Later!

I like BearShare the best. BearShare does't slow my computer down as bad a LimeWire, and I can find files better with the BearShare search then I can in LimeWire. The BearShare forum is also more helpful if you have any problems. The new LimeWire 1.5 also seems to have some bugs.

But LimeWire is a good second choice, and BearShare only runs on Windows.

Yes, LimeWire 1.5 is a bit buggy. But that's why it has been pulled off the net. There were also some buggy things in 1.4b. Also, the fact that LW runs with Java tends to slow a windows machine down much more than a windows native application like BearShare.

Yes, but LimeWire isn't full of spyware.

Try them all, and come back to use the fasted, best and most featured, plus still developing. GNUCLEUS V1.33.
No spyware, you choose upgrade or not, and it can resume downloads (re-search for same file/size).

    Have fun

I'm using Gnucleus, and I'm pretty happy with it.

I've used Bearshare (many versions) and the spyware infestation thing is a hassle to get rid of and sometimes just crashes your computer trying to get rid of it. And that's assuming you're aware of spyware in the first place. I don't recommend Bearshare for a newbie.

I used Limewire and that worked pretty good. It's slow, but I'm on a dial-up connection and I'm used to slow. The biggest prob I had with it was a whole lot of "can't connect" messages. I don't want to say it was the fault of the program because it ran very dependably in every other way. So maybe I was doing something wrong. And I did get a few files through it now and again.

But now I'm running Gnucleus and I'm perfectly happy staying with it. I especially like the "resume" ability. It's intuitive and works great! It's a simple machine, but it's understandable. I recommend it, even for newbies.
