Not a fan of Jon Stewart or Ellen DeGeneres hosting the Oscars? Well, here's something completely different for you then: Hugh Jackman as a no-joke-making Academy Awards emcee. Possibly with singing and/or dancing!
That's what Nikki Finke is reporting, anyway. Producers of the glitzy movie awards show are looking to bring in the Aussie actor to add a different spin to the show, since—while he was funny—Jon Stewart's more acerbic comedy stylings brought the show to its lowest ratings in years. People around the globe don't know who that fool is!
It's also sort of a sad nod to Jackman's film Australia which now, after a string of bad reviews and bad box office weekends, looks to be completely out of the Oscar race. I mean, they wouldn't have a host who had a stake in winning any kind of awards right? No producers would ever let that happen, right?
Jackman was a fantastic three-time Tonys host, but that's because he has these great musical theatre abilities and the gays and the ladies lurve him and it just seemed to make sense, him shining brightly there in that quiet little CBS Sunday night corner. The Oscars are wayyy bigger and, because there was only one movie musical this year (and it was about ladybusiness), probably far less open to the idea of Jackman grinning and soft-shoeing his way around the Kodak theater. One thing we do know, though, is that he won't be doing any stand-up style jokes in the opening bit. The Oscars are getting rid of that entirely, which may be why they're going for a non-comedian.
Could be interesting, could be horrible.
