I absolutely LOVED this show! It was right up my street!

I got quite emotional and involved when that poor man got his stick kicked away - and chuffed at the end when he got his job back! Ah.....
I was also pleased that he had at least one friend in that young blonde maid.

I really thought it was brilliantly acted and believable and so enjoyable.

It did remind me of Upstairs Downstairs a lot though - and I'm afraid I haven't read through this thread yet so I apologise if this has been answered already - but is it the new remake of Upstairs Downstairs? Or is this story based on a famous book anyway or something?
I just wondered if it was a new story or not?

Yeah, it just seems petty to whinge about her accent, which isn't exactly grating or that strong. The upper classes did travel a bit, so it's not surprising that many of them would marry those from the upper classes beyond these shores with accents to match.

Elizabeth McGovern is reasonable as an actress and is fine in this series, too. She played a minor role in The Wings of the Dove as the companion of Millie, a film that I enjoyed a lot, and she did OK in it, too.

Not a bad series, which has its moments, but it does feel a bit soapy at times. Still, it's a watcher and has kept me generally interested.

But they make even the lower classes seem genteel. I mean, when was the last time you heard a poor person use any word stronger than 'bloody' in an Edwardian drama?
