I *love* French cinema, in fact I did a presentation it the other day
It's such a fascinating film industry and produces truly wonderful films, from the classical poetic realism (La Grande Illusion and Les Enfants du Paradis are two of my faves) to the Nouvelle Vague and the striking difference between the two styles yet retaining that French charm!
And my favourite film ever, [I]Am
A genuine modern classic imo!
I absolutely adore Godard too, & agree I'm not too sure why! Maybe it's the beauty of his originality, especially as with cinema in the UK today it seems that Hollywood has become too dominant and Godard's work seems so refreshing & exciting.
I recently watched Eloge de L'Amour & enjoyed it as much as A Bout De Souffle & Le Mepris - it's fantastic that he's still film-making such beautiful pieces today as in the '60s.
I think he's turned me into a francophile too.
